Linking is important. SEs love links.

Work hard to create more useful sites. Get great software for building web sites. One that does SEO for you.

The best way to get more traffic is to have lots of pages, 100s of them, thousands are better, with relevant content (information). SEs love quality content.

You can set it up easily. There are few options

1. Buying just shared hosting packages for hosting

2. Buying private label program where they brand the entire service for you. So you will have your own hosting company.

3. Subscribing for dedicated server.

Depending on the requirement you can opt. Option one could be cheaper, Option 2 is not too expensive and easy to manage, Option 3 migh be expensive and you need to do lot of management task. I had taken option 2 since I had around 100 sites to host and it gave me time for my marketing and sales activities. You should proably mail the companies and get the info. I am sure they would help you to achieve what you want. Some of them I host are given in sources

If you don%26#039;t know that, maybe you should leave hosting to the pros. If you do manage to do it yourself and something goes wrong, who do you call? If you really want to try it you can register your domain name with a lot of different companies - last time I did it I used www.register.com/

You will need a computer with an Internet connection that is always on. DSL may be a good low cost choice if you don%26#039;t expect a lot of traffic. You will also need a static IP address, if you don%26#039;t have that from your provider, you can use something like www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns but you may not have good reliability. As for your web server, you can set it up to use Apache, or if you are using a windows server, you can use Microsoft%26#039;s web server product.

If you have never done this, you might be better off using Godaddy.com or fatcow.com to host your site.

ASP (Not ASP.NET) should be available on most servers (even some unix servers support ASP) I am not sure, if any free server can do that. Best way to check -- upload some .asp and Windows scripts and check if they work.

You have to buy static IP. Its not a software solution. Your ISP can help you on getting static IP address.

Use a photo editing program (like Photoshop) to resize the pics. The program you used to scan the images in with should have a re-seize function in it though.

Other Replys:Normally scan your photo. You should then get or use some kind of image/photo editing program. (I reccomend Irfan View, which can be used to edit the sizes of images and their file types). After scanning your photo, open up your program and edit it there.

(If you do get Irfan View, open your image up %26gt; Click %26#039;Image%26#039; %26gt; %26#039;Resize/Resample...%26#039; and edit there.)

A domain name is not free ex: www.YOU.com is NOT free. While cheaper, www.YOU.net or www.YOU.org are also still not free.

An alternative is to register a domain re-direct. Instead of typing for example www.YOU.bravnet.com/index.html you can get (a free) domain re-direct from http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ which instead, users will type http://www.YOU.co.nr/ which is a lot easier for guests. :)

As I mentioned, you can search and come up with a few sites, they WILL offer you a full .com for free but you have to continually post in their forums or fulfill advertisement/sponser requirements.

However if you wanted to get a reasonably priced professional designer I would have to ask what you call reasonable. In the USA most decent designers charge about 50 dollars an hour. and most auto mechanics charge about the same. The thing is most people have issues paying that much for their website.

It is not unusual for a company to charge 1000 dollars for a ten page website with a database and ecommerce.

Be aware of companies that charge far less as they may be purchasing your domain name under their name or not allowing you to modify your own site without other charges.

Another thing some companies do is they require you to host with them and will not give you the source code if you leave their hosting plans.

It may sound strange but if you are not listed as the full owner of a domain name then the person that is actually owns the copyright of anything posted under that name.

Absolutely. I particularly like registering domains on Yahoo because you can go into their control panel ( http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com ) and use them for your own personal DNS server. You can go into Advanced DNS and point the domain name to an IP#. ie I have mine pointing to the IP# of my road runner account. My IP# hasn%26#039;t changed in over a year, so I use my Win2000 as a web server as well.

I simply told it sharpnetwork.net = my Road Runner IP#. So I am using Yahoo as my own personal DNS server too. Ok, but for the specifics of your question: When you sign up for webhosting at any company, in order for it to work correctly, you have to use their DNS servers (which is the way it has been as long as I can remember). You look at the company%26#039;s support page (or they will likely include the info when you signup via email) and find their dns server (ie Primary DNS: dns.webhost.com and Secondary DNS: dns2.webhost.com.

For this situation, you go to the Yahoo control panel (link above) and click on your domain name. Scroll to the bottom of the page and find where it says Primary: yns1.yahoo.com and Secondary: yns2.yahoo.com . Click the Change Nameservers button (DNS Server and Name Servers are same thing). It is greyed out, then click the Unlock Domain button next to it, and it will be ungreyed. Now simply overwrite the existing Primary and Secondary name server with the one provided by your web host company. Good luck

You can create a site with a free service such as Yahoo Geocities or Angelfire; however, these sites will make your domain very long (www.angelfire.com/ca/xxxxxx/index.html)... There are many pay for hosting/domain sites such as godaddy.com you can use as well.

Either approach will still require you to develop the site. You can code in basic HTML (many great scripts from hotscripts.com), download a template from thousands of sites using any basic search, or pay to have one created. If you download a template or use software such as %26quot;Microsoft Frontpage%26quot; you need only very little knowledge of HTML as the software can do the coding for you.

If you try to provide a DNS over your DSL connection you may get flagged by your ISP. Many ISPs will see the broadcast from your server over their network and flag your account. They will contact you and tell you to pull down your server or be disconnected from their service. Make sure you can create a DNS server with your current ISP plan before trying, otherwise you may end up in trouble.

Can anyone give me a little know-how about starting up a website? Perhaps some step-by-step about how to go from knowing nothing about this, to running a website? Get web hosting. YOu can get web hosting thru Yahoo or Godaddy, or a gazillion other web hosting companies on line. You will likely only need a teeny bit of disk space for your site, but you may want to make sure you have at least 500mb of space so that you have enough room to have email accounts associated with your website/domain. Get a UNIX/RedHat/Linux/Apache type account. You don%26#039;t need to pay for %26quot;windows%26quot; hosting. You should pay between $7 and $20 per month for hosting.... less, and you don%26#039;t know what kind of customer service you are going to get, more, and you are paying too much.

Step 3:

Go to the place where you registered your domain name and make sure your DNS is pointing to the place where you are hosting your website.

more explanation: if you register mycompany.com and your host is hostingcompany.com, you need to make sure your domain name is pointing to hosting company. your dns may look like this:

ns1.hostingcompany.com

ns2.hostingcompany.com

Often times your webhost will do the DNS transfer for you. You will need to tell them your regristrar account%26#039;s username and password. That%26#039;s their job. It%26#039;s ok to give it to them. You might want to change it afterwards though.

Side note: I recommend registering your own domain. Don%26#039;t have your hosting company register it for you, as you want to own your domain name and have it registered in your own name.

The next step, of course, is to create your website and then load it onto your server. You should learn XHTML and CSS to do a good job here. You only need a text editor such as notepad or textpad to create your site and the filemanager portion of your control panel (see below) to upload your files, but you can also go all out and get Dreamweaver, or other WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor. MySQL is a type of database. If this is your first website and you asked the question you did, you likely will never need to use it. However, it is good to get a hosting package that allows for at least one MySQL database. You will only ever need one database, as you can have almost unlimited tables in this one database.

cPanel:

cPanel is a control panel for webhosting. It%26#039;s a type of control panel... brand name. It is a really great control panel. WHat is a control panel? A control panel is a GUI by which you can control your website. It includes file manager, where you can upload pages to your website (uploading means putting files from your computer onto your website that is hosted by your hosting company you picked in step 2), control of .htaccess, which allows you to set up password protected directories, email, which allows you to set a default account for your site as well as create email mail boxes and email forwards.

The software widely used for developing simple websites are :

html (xtml which is advanced one)

on most occassions, apart from a simple website, people may require complex functionalities for their websites. Some times some programming may be required at this point, Java Script, php and other programming software come to picture.

Some times you may need some animation to be added, Flash comes to picture here (some develop website only in flas, but it is not recommended. Search engines do not recognise images and javascript much)

Some times you may need to collect the address and details of the visitors of the website (say yours is a hotel booking website.) Then you need to store these data in a database. There are several databases but MySQL is a freeware. And for small and medium business this is very useful and popular. (MS-Sql, Oracle etc are costly)

As you can see now, MySql is not used develop the website, but to store the info in the background.

After you develop a website, you need to store this in some server. So you go to the cpanel and click on the file manager and upload yoru files, Later you edit your existing page details here. (All the stuffs related to files are handled here.)
